This summer we've been on a mission to find Southern California's best beach front and roof top bars. Our list has been hit and miss — not every ocean view venue guarantees a stellar cocktail menu.
One boutique coastal hotel stands out. Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica was our most recent stop for brunch. We met up in the lower cafe called Coast. If you're anywhere near a window (which is easy when three walls are lined with them), you've got front seat viewing for some great people watching, and an expanse of white sand dotted with lifeguard towers. Runners, cyclists, tourists, speed walkers, and wandering souls pass by at a steady stream along the beach boardwalk as you sit comfortably in cushy wicker chairs in a cheery, nautical themed ambiance. And then of course, there are those palm trees and crashing waves just a quick stroll away.
We started our meal by ordering a Bloody Maria with Patrón Añejo and a Greyhound with Patrón Silver. The homemade Maria mix and freshly squeezed grapefruit juice made our drinks sensational. The beverages perfectly complimented our delicious brunch of a bacon packed sandwich, egg white mushroom omelet, country potatoes, and heaping plate of fresh berries and fruit. Basically, we dined like queens. We could have sat there all day if possible. The meal was capped with cappuccinos with almond biscotti.
If you'll be anywhere near Santa Monica when you're in Los Angeles, this beachfront cozy Coast restaurant is a must. Oh, and one last thing. We wore flip-flops. Now you know why this 4 star hotel is such a special place.
