On any given day you can find a farmers market within a ten mile radius of my front door. This gives me no excuse not to incorporate the freshest and best ingredients into the cocktails I’m making at home. I want my drinks to be complex in flavor but simple to make. These cocktails will delight your taste buds with very little effort.
This week I got my hands on some absolutely stunning bouquets of basil. I was tempted to spare the herbs from my muddler and instead showcase them in a vase on the kitchen table. But I knew the citrus undertones of the basil combined with my 100% Agave Patrón Silver would be more appreciated by the company we were expecting. I got to work, combining the Patrón Silver with the basil, a touch of honey, and a pinch of smoked paprika. The result was a cocktail made for summer BBQs.
Basil & Smoked Paprika Cocktail 1.5 ounces Patrón Silver 1 teaspoon honey Pinch of smoked paprika 2 large basil leaves
Directions: Muddle the basil leaves in the Patrón Silver, honey, and smoke paprika. Strain into a glass with ice and garnish with additional basil leaves.
I also brought home a bundle of lemon grass which I suspected would be a stellar combination with Patrón Reposado, a tequila with hints of spice, sweet oak (Patrón Reposado aged in oak barrels for about six months), and beeswax. The oil from lemon grass attracts honey bees, which led me to believe that the synthesis of lemongrass and Patrón Reposado could be divine…and it is. This drink is insanely refreshing and should be sipped to savor.
Lemon Grass Cocktail 1.5 Patrón Reposado 1 teaspoon organic sugar 1 stalk lemon grass
Directions: Chop off the ends of the lemon grass and peel off the tougher outside leaves. Cut the rest of the stalk into halves, then muddle with the Patrón Reposado. Add the sugar, and continue to muddle until the sugar has dissolved. Strain out the lemon grass then our over ice.
